چکیده

Aircraft landing using the Global Positioning System (GPS) in equatorial regions is more difficult than in other regions because ionospheric scintillation is prevalent. Ionospheric scintillation causes amplitude fades of 20 dB or more and an increase in the phase jitter. This research evaluates techniques to enhance a GPS receiver for overcoming ionospheric scintillation. To validate the designed GPS receiver, a GPS channel model for aircraft landing in equatorial regions is built based on the use of high fidelity GPS constellation simulator, clock emulator, and real ionosphere interfered with GPS data collected in an equatorial region. The results of this research demonstrate that the integration of a GPS receiver with a low-cost inertial navigation system provides the capability to operate continuously during the periods of strong scintillation. In addition, so-called vector processing also shows promise for less severe scintillation environment. Various combinations of receiver tracking architectures and aiding methods have been conducted to quantify the sensitivity improvement of an “aided” GPS receiver.

Availability Benefit of Future Dual Frequency GPS Avionics under Strong Ionospheric Scintillation

A Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver may lose carrier tracking lock to the GPS signal under deep and frequent fades due to ionospheric scintillation. The frequent loss of lock observed during a strong scintillation period from the past solar maximum can significantly reduce GPS aviation availability. However, the frequency diversity (L1 and L5 frequencies) from the future GPS is expected ...

Correlation of GPS signal fades due to ionospheric scintillation for aviation applications

Deep and frequent Global Positioning System (GPS) signal fading due to strong ionospheric scintillation is a major concern for GPSguided aviation in equatorial areas during high solar activity. A GPS aviation receiver may lose carrier tracking lock under deep fading, and a lost channel cannot be used for position calculation until lock is reestablished. Hence, frequent loss of lock due to frequ...

Characteristics of Deep Gps Signal Fading Due to Ionospheric Scintillation for Aviation Receiver Design

Aircraft navigation based on GPS (Global Positioning System) and WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) requires both code and carrier measurements to calculate the position estimate [1]. A GPS receiver’s carrier tracking loop is weaker than code tracking loop. Thus, carrier lock can more easily be broken under deep signal fading caused by ionospheric scintillation. If a receiver cannot track cod...

Overcoming Ionospheric Scintillation for Worldwide Gps Aviation a Dissertation Submitted to the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the Committee on Graduate Studies of Stanford University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy

Together, the Global Positioning System (GPS) and the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) can guide aircraft down to 200 ft above the runway. This approach procedure is referred to as Localizer Performance with Vertical guidance (LPV)-200. Approach guidance using GPS and WAAS has many advantages over traditional precision approach guidance using the Instrument Landing System (ILS) and the numb...

A Comparison of GPS Performance in a Scintillation Environment at Ascension Island

Post-sunset disturbances in the equatorial ionosphere routinely cause rapid phase and amplitude fluctuations (i.e., scintillation) of radio waves propagating through the disturbed regions. The intensity of scintillations is positively correlated with the solar cycle and the associated signal fades will often exceed 20 dB at L-band frequencies during solar maximum. The effect of such an environm...
